Physical Education

At DVIS the primary focus of PE is to ensure the children are developing their whole body, their mental and physical skills, as well as their strength and coordination.

In Reception children have a wide variety of resources to use to practice their physical skills including the climbing equipment, trikes, scooters and smaller equipment such as bats, balls and goals. The children have a PE lesson in the hall once a week from the second part of the autumn term.

In Year 1 and Year 2 the children all have PE twice a week. The curriculum alternates from term to term with gymnastics, games, athletics and dance.

The school has a dance teacher that teaches 10 sessions of dance to each Year 1 and Year 2 class every year.

Year 2 have use a local private school pool for a week of swimming in preparation for their move to Year 3.

Groups of children have opportunities to take part in football tournaments with other local schools.

Other physical education experiences include using local sports grounds for games lessons and athletics, skipping workshops, yoga, a mobile climbing wall, specific sessions adapted for children with additional needs.

Herne Hill Velodrome

We are incredibly lucky to be so close to the iconic Herne Hill Velodrome. We use the Velodrome in the summer for Year 2 children to support their cycling skills. During the year we also use it as part of our active travel and start the day with a few laps!

London Mini Marathon

Over the past few years a number of our children have been participants in the London Mini Marathon, completing the last mile of the marathon route by Buckingham Palace. This has been a highlight for many and a great way of promoting fitness for all.

The PE and School Sports Network

DVIS works alongside the PESSN to develop the PE provision at DVIS. They train our team as well as support with teaching of lessons.

PESSN run intra and inter school sports days which the children love!
