Spirituality

At DVIS we want every child’s experience at school to be about the whole person. We believe that every child is created in the image of God and should be nurtured, encouraged and challenged in equal measure. Through all our learning experiences we want the children at DVIS to hear about God, learn about themselves, about who they are and what their potential is.

Spirituality is a personal journey that involves understanding oneself, relating to others, and reflecting on life’s meaning. We believe that this process can also lead to action and change.

At DVIS we use the idea of a window, mirror and door when we thinking about spirituality with the children.

We look through the window – Opportunities to look out on the world to gaze and wonder: The Wow and Ow moments. The things we find amazing and those things that bring us up short, the tougher, more painful moments.  We Encounter: the learning about life.

We look in the mirror – Opportunities for children to reflect, to look inward and to consider some of the big questions of life: to explore their own insights and those of others. We Reflect: the learning from life.

We go through the door – Giving opportunities to children to respond, to do something, to go through the door of a creative expression of their own thoughts and convictions. We Transform: the learning to live by, putting into action what we believe.

Across our curriculum and day to day life at school we respect and nurture children’s spiritual qualities through:

  • creativity in the curriculum and breadth of learning experiences offered

  • asking questions, exploring topics, and discussing issues

  • recognising and respecting their faith background

  • modelling spirituality in our relationships and interactions between one another

  • the use of spaces inside and outside of school
